Metaethics

The central question I aim to answer in metaethics is whether it’s currently possible to build (a) institutions that reliably credential moral experts that (b) the public can reasonably defer to without doing the work of evaluating their expertise for themselves. And, if not, can we get there?

I'd be happy to chat about any and all papers :)

Not Adrift: Why Morality is not a Cognitive Island (draft available)

Synopsis: This paper argues that a popular account of why it's difficult to recognize moral experts is mistaken.

How to Build a Field (in progress)

Synopsis: “Not Adrift” argues against a certain view about what distinguishes morality from non-moral fields with respect to our ability to recognize experts, but it leaves open what the right view is. In this paper, I aim to answer that question. In my view, understanding the difference requires understanding the conditions that enable successful fields to become successful.
